Sacred Trails: Shikoku's Pilgrimage Inspires The PlaidPath's Community of Adventurers

Walking the Shikoku pilgrimage was unlike any other — a profound journey that unfolded with its own challenges, spiritual revelations, and moments of unexpected grace. Unlike the Camino de Santiago, where the path stretches from point A to B, the Shikoku pilgrimage forms a circular route around the island, encompassing 88 temples — each a sanctuary of ritual and reflection.

From the outset, I immersed myself in the spiritual tapestry of Japan, where each temple visit was not just a physical trek but a sacred ritual. At every shrine, I performed intricate ceremonies, culminating in an offering of wishes for peace, love, and health — a tribute to my own intentions for taking pilgrimage as well as the journey’s deeper purpose.

Navigating Japan’s humid summer and enduring two typhoons tested my resilience daily. Plans shifted constantly, forcing me to adapt and recalibrate in the face of adversity.

Unlike the Camino, where camaraderie often blooms among fellow pilgrims, I traversed much of Shikoku in solitude. These obstacles were mine to face alone; yet, despite being alone, I was never truly without support.

From the honking encouragement of passing cars to the kindness of strangers offering water or shelter, the trail unfailingly provided solace and strength when I needed it most.

Amidst moments of doubt, the pilgrimage became a testament to perseverance and community. I quickly realized that this journey wasn’t just about me — it was a collective endeavor supported by those who believed in my journey. Their faith buoyed me through challenges, urging me onward up treacherous mountains until I reached the 88th temple.

Through these trials, I discovered a profound sense of belonging to a larger community that transcended language and culture. It underscored the truth that we are stronger together than alone — a principle I carry forward into The PlaidPath.

Just as the Shikoku pilgrimage enriched my life with its lessons of resilience and community, The PlaidPath invites you to embark on journeys that foster bonds of peace, love, and health.
